Abstract

“Selected Poems & Commentary” includes a collection of poems composed by Festus Ngaruka.

Selected poems by Festus Ngaruka, as well as commentary on reader responses to the poem “Private Worlds,” first published in TriQuarterly (73, Fall 1988), a publication of Northwestern University.

Dr. Kavazeua Festus Ngaruka (d. 2019), from Namibia received his Ph.D. in Sociology from Binghamton University (SUNY), NY. Operating from a world-historical perspective, his scholarly concerns included race and other ‘identities,’ history and problems of social science, including epistemology and social movements. He taught a range of courses in sociology and is a research associate of the Fernand Braudel Center (Binghamton University).

He was a critically minded creative sociologist and an intellectual and poet. He is remembered for his poetry and his contributions to intellectual discussions, including through works published by OKCIR. He is described as an “unsung intellectual hero” in his home country, Namibia. Published works: His work includes poems like “Private Worlds,” which was published in TriQuarterly (73, Fall 1988). He is memorialized by his community, with an annual lecture intended to mark his birthday.
