Here’s a New English Verse Translation of “Adam’s Descendants,” a Poem from the Persian Poet Sa’di Shirazi, Adorning in Gold a Wall Carpet Gifted from Iran to the United Nations by Mohammad H. Tamdgidi

Sa’di Shirazi (13th century AD)

Adam’s Descendants

Adam’s descendants are in frame from one strand,
While in their creation aim as one soul stand.

If a member is in stress from his time’s scar
Others become restless, nearby and afar.

If you’re about others’ griefs and pains carefree
You don’t deserve the name of humanity.

Note (1): Those familiar with this poem by Sa’di Shirazi in Persian may also note the cross-language similarities woven in the rhymes and the eleven syllables in each line. Noticing other subtleties of this interpretation and translation of the short and wondrous poem from Sa’di depends on the extent of the reader’s patience in imagination.

Note (2): An image of and background to the noted carpet, woven by the Iranian grandmaster artist Mohammad Seirafian, can be found  here.
